For stair and ramp handrails specifically (as opposed to purely decorative top rails), the rail's diameter and clearance from the wall need to meet recognized graspability requirements so the rail can be gripped securely in a fall-arrest situation:

• Circular profiles: typically 1¼"–2" (32–51 mm) outside diameter, per IRC R311.7.8 and IBC 1014 guidance
• Non-circular profiles (square/rectangular): perimeter and cross-section dimensions are constrained so the rail remains graspable — generally a perimeter of 4"–6¼" (102–160 mm) with a maximum cross-section dimension of 2¼" (57 mm)
• Wall clearance: a minimum of 1½" (38 mm) between the rail and any wall or surface, for a full hand grip
• Continuous graspability: rail runs should remain continuously graspable along their length, with returns or terminations that don't create a snag point

For runs longer than standard stock lengths, rail sections are joined using internal splice connectors rather than visible welds, keeping the finished surface continuous and free of grind marks.
